STABILISATION OF MINE SPOILS

Where applicable

In open cast mining, over burden dumps erode highly by rainwater and pollutes the surrounding with the spoils. Normal vegetation on the slopes takes long time and to quicken the process geotextiles are applied. Jute geotextiles are in use for over 50 years in the developed countries and in India the Coal Fields have started their application recently.

Products applied

Open mesh woven geotextiles of BGW 500 & 730 are commonly used for stabilization, specification of which are given in Slope Protection & Vegetation.

Why applied

The surface of the heaps is not fertile as a result accumulation of soil with nutrient takes time. Again good soil when placed on the slopes is washed away by rain water and vegetation can not grow. The  open mesh fabrics hold the good soil and allow the seeds to grow quickly and stop pollution.

How to apply

The methods have been discussed in Slope Protection & Vegetation and in the plan below. However, in this field of application care should be taken to reduce the slope with the help of flexible gabion walls to be constructed at intervals of suitable distance, particularly for the mines on hills.

If the soil is of poor fertility, good soil with manure may be spread over the slope and thereafter geotextiles may be applied to achieve quick result otherwise good soil may be dumped at places for plantation of deep-rooted trees. Arrangement of irrigation at least for two seasons in dry areas is recommended for quick action.
