EARTH FILLING/COVER AND SAND/EARTHEN WALL USING SAND BAG

 

Where applicable

Disaster management requires immediate repair of damages caused by natural calamities like earth quake, cyclone, land slide, avalanche and flood to protect life and property and earth filling is necessary for restoration of normal life in the affected area.

Earthen wall is also necessary to divert flow of water and to block water way. Earth fill is applied to repair broken dam or embankment and similar cases.

Earth cover is necessary for coverage of garbage for quick consolidation and vegetation, it also helps grow plants on the heap of boulders, where establishment of vegetation is very difficult.
Temporary earth/sand walls are often made for defence and security purpose.

Why applied

Filling operation is very quick and to the point and wastage is minimum. The filled bags may be dropped if necessary. The bags have very high abrasion resistance and takes firm position having no chance of slippage.

It is also easy to build a sand/earth wall of a considerable height with the help of filled and closed bags stacking one on the other.

On earth cover in jute bags plants can grow healthily and trees can also be planted for stabilization of garbage or dump of debris.

How to apply

The bags are filled with sand /earth as the case may be and the filled bags are closed manually or mechanically depending on the condition. The filled bags may be transported or air lifted to the site and placed /dropped as per the site condition.

The contents may be other than earth /sand like garbage, debris, stone dust etc., which are available in the emergency situation near the affected area.

Coverage of a site by earth may be carried out using loosely filled bags so that the bag can easily take the shape of the surface on which it is placed to avoid displacement
